ISO19770- 3 and 4 and 1 and……. SAM standardized !

De vertaling van deze blog is binnenkort beschikbaar

Although the current release of the ISO/IEC 19770-3 standard is a good step forward it is still dependent on the software licensors to adept, adapt and adopt. I do congratulate my fellow WG21 members with this published standard and hope it will become a very lively and worldwide accepted document.

At In2SAM we treasure the fact that we’re part of the Dutch N381007 “software and systems engineering” commission and also the Dutch representative in the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 7/WG 21 which develops, publishes and changes the ISO 19770 standard. And for that matter we also would like to point the attention also to the other parts of ISO19770 which are currently being revised or built.

The ISO19770-1 is up for a new release in the coming period, but also the ISO19770-4, which will bring the metering of software usage (RUM) into a standard. In this diagram you see what happening (or in fact already happened) on 19770.

I would like to invite all my colleagues in the field of Software Asset Management to take a look at the standards, and tell us what your experience is. Also, if you would like to see things differently (maybe better) we can be your channel for your voice from the Netherlands. Do not hesitate to contact us via our contact form at the In2SAM.com website.

Back to the new ISO19770-3 standard: If and when all software licensors adopt and if and when all SAM tool vendors adopt (and why shouldn’t they, it’s their core business) then together with the dash 2 and new dash 4 verifications or certifications by the individual software licensors/publishers isn’t necessary anymore. There should be one body left: the body that certifies the tool on the conformance on those different dashes of ISO19770. Even those organizations that built their own License management or SAM tools for internal use can go for this approval. So my idea is to adopt the dash 2 and this dash 3 as soon as possible to start talking one language and work with clear metrics. And yes there’s still some legacy to work through. Only looking at the current speed in which technology is changing the biggest problem is adapting to that.

As a fact this would make an en end to the current urge the software creators have in auditing their clients with all accompanying time and costs that could be better used for the business. The ISO 19770 standard is already available for more than a decade and still has to get more accepted by the Software creator, publishers, vendors and users. This will take some time but in the end we’ll all benefit. I do agree that getting things changed in a global body is not an easy venture, as interests and laws differ across the globe. The ISO standards do tend to have an old fashioned feel, but when you take a closer look you’ll see a group of seasoned specialists with a drive to make the world around SAM easier, by setting clear and well thought standards for all parties involved.

And since software is a huge part of your organizations IT budget there should be a solid, standardized process and toolset to make sure this money is spent well.

If you’re really interested in the ISO standard, and you want to get involved, we would like to invite you to work with us on a brand new, not yet defined standard in the ISO 19770 family which we will bring to the global community the upcoming.

Again, don’t hesitate to contact me or my colleagues at In2SAM if you want to get more involved with those global standards.
